Can it really edit the text that's already in the PDF?

Yes, and that is unusual for a free tool — most only stamp new text on top and leave the original showing through. Here the run you clicked is covered with a rectangle painted in the page's own background colour, and your replacement is drawn at the same baseline in a matching font and colour. On the finished page the old wording is gone and the new wording is in its place.

Is this redaction? Can I use it to hide confidential information?

No, and this matters. A PDF stores text as drawing instructions, and covering something visually does not remove those instructions. The original characters remain inside the file and can be recovered with the right software, exactly as they can when someone draws a black box over a name. Use this to correct and update documents. To genuinely remove sensitive content, take it out before the PDF is produced.

Will the edited text match the original font?

It is matched, not preserved. The PDF is asked which font a line uses and the closest of the standard built-in faces is chosen — sans, serif or monospace, with bold and italic. For documents set in Arial, Helvetica, Times or Courier the result is very close. For a distinctive brand typeface it will be a near miss rather than an exact one, because the original font is usually embedded with only the characters that document already used, so it cannot draw new ones.

What happens if my replacement is longer than the original?

It is shrunk slightly so it still fits the space, and you are told how many edits that applied to. Text running off the edge of the page or into the next column is a worse outcome than text a point smaller than its neighbours. There is room to grow into any blank space to the right, up to the page margin or the next column.

Can I type in Hindi, or other non-Latin scripts?

Not yet. The built-in PDF fonts cover Latin, Western European accents and common punctuation, but not Devanagari, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese or Korean — and the rupee sign is outside them too. If an edit contains characters that cannot be drawn, that edit is left untouched and you are told which characters caused it, rather than the download failing. Everything else in the document still exports.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The document is opened, rendered, edited and rebuilt entirely inside your browser tab. There is no server involved, no account, and no watermark. Once the page is closed the file is gone from memory. That is why it is safe to open a contract or a payslip here.

Why can't I click some of the text?

If a page has no clickable lines it is a scan — a photograph of a page rather than text — and there is nothing to edit. You can still add text over it and cover things up. To turn a scan into real text, run it through the Image to Text (OCR) tool first.

Does it change the rest of the document?

No. The original file is loaded and only the changes you made are drawn onto it. Page count, page size, images, and every line you did not touch are left exactly as they were.

Will the paragraph re-wrap around my edit?

No. Each line is edited in place, so a longer replacement will not push words onto the next line the way a word processor would. For a paragraph of prose it is often easier to edit each line, or to convert the file with PDF to Word, rewrite it there, and convert it back.

What's the file size limit?

30MB. Every page is rendered at high resolution in memory, so a very long document will use a lot of it — on a phone, stick to shorter files.

How to use the PDF Editor
